about

Conor Doherty (electric guitar), Pete Quinn (piano), Elma McElligott (alto sax), Karen Ryan (mandola).
The asymmetric rhythms of Balkan music were first introduced into Irish music by Andy Irvine through his work with the ground-breaking band Planxty, of whom we were all big fans growing up, on albums such as Cold Blow and the Rainy Night (1974) and After the Break (1979), as well as solo albums such as Rainy Sundays...Windy Dreams (1980) and his 1992 album with Davy Spillane, EastWind. A Bulgarian circle dance in seven (divided 3 + 2 + 2), learnt from the playing of the traditional Hungarian musician Arany Zoltán, Conor had previously recorded ‘Chetvorno Horo’ on his 2014 debut album The Savage and the Tender. We thought it would be an ideal way of nodding to this particular influence by arranging the piece for the quartet.
