about

Karen Ryan (banjo), Elma McElligott (alto sax), Pete Quinn (piano), Conor Doherty (electric guitar).
Karen learnt the first tune from Paul Rodden, a five-string banjo player from Buncrana whom she played with in The Fiddler’s Elbow, Kentish Town, for a number of years, always in the company of Paul’s cousin, and Karen's great friend, guitarist John Cutliffe. A composition of the late Galway flute player Vincent Broderick, the second tune was made popular in London by our great friend and fiddle player, Bryan Rooney, who recorded it on his classic 1999 album, The Godfather. Karen and Elma were inspired to dust off the banjo and sax, respectively, after a fantastic weekend of music in Alsace, where The London Lasses (and Pete) shared a bill with Shaskeen. This included a couple of late nights with Shaskeen’s Tom Cussen and Tony Howley playing banjo and sax in the bar until the wee small hours.
