Elma McElligott (alto sax), Karen Ryan (banjo), Pete Quinn (piano), Conor Doherty (electric guitar).
Due to their respective titles, we refer to this set as the ‘Bird Reels’. Elma composed the first reel, inspired by a descending three-note motif (C-B flat-G) sung every morning by a bird in her garden which backs on to Epping Forest (Elma’s personal running ground!). You hear the motif at the very start in the piano, then played as the first three notes of the reel by the sax. Karen composed the second reel, naming it after a main road on the borders of Kingsbury and Wembley Park near where she grew up, one of the main approaches for crowds walking to matches at Wembley Stadium. We finish the set with the classic tune, ‘The Pigeon on the Gate’. Again featuring the Big Band with the two Daves (Whitford and Ohm) guesting, the textural build-up in the final tune enables the pigeon to take flight!
