about

Elma McElligott (flute), Karen Ryan (fiddle), Pete Quinn (piano), Conor Doherty (electric guitar).
The first tune was famously recorded – in a set preceded by ‘The Tailor’s Thimble’ – by Leitrim flute player John McKenna and Sligo fiddle player James Morrison (plus an unknown pianist) for the Columbia label in New York in February 1929. Karen and Pete previously recorded the tune on Mick Mulvey’s debut album, Within A Mile O’ Jamestown, Mick himself being an ardent fan of the McKenna style. Also known as John Blessing’s and O’Connell’s, De Dannan recorded the second tune on their 1983 album Song for Ireland, naming it after the Limerick box player and co-founder of Shaskeen, Charlie Harris, from whom they learnt it. Karen has been teaching this tune to her music students, as their first reel, for the past 25 years – and still likes it!
