about

Conor Doherty (vocal, acoustic guitar), Pete Quinn (piano), Elma McElligott (low whistle), Karen Ryan (low whistle).
As well as writing some new tunes for the album, we also wanted to include some original songs. Pete recalled reading James Joyce’s early collection of poetry, Chamber Music, many years ago and thought that the inherent musicality of the poems might provide a useful source for setting to music – Joyce himself once referred to the collection as a “suite of songs”. Unfolding over a sequence of 36 brief poems, with its narrative portrayal of a youthful poet’s idealized love which ends in failure, Joyce noted that he’d written Chamber Music “when I was a lonely boy, walking about by myself at night and thinking that one day a girl would love me”. In ‘Sleep Now’, the speaker urges sleep as a means of finding peace and becalming an ‘unquiet heart’.

lyrics

Sleep now, O sleep now,
O you unquiet heart!
A voice crying "Sleep now"
Is heard in my heart.

The voice of the winter
Is heard at the door.
O sleep, for the winter
Is crying "Sleep no more."

My kiss will give peace now
And quiet to your heart—
Sleep on in peace now,
O you unquiet heart!
